What Happened at the 2005 Open Championship

The R&A moved The Old Course up in the rota a couple years for a very special reason: The 2005 British Open was Jack Nicklaus' last, and he wanted to go out at the Home of Golf.

Nicklaus, 65 years old when this tournament was played, wasn't able to make the cut. But he did give the throngs gathered on No. 18 in the second round — a huge crowd that included many of the golfers who had already completed their play for the day — a thrill. Nicklaus went out with a birdie, rolling in an 18-footer to huge roars.

It ended a remarkable career in the Open. Although Nicklaus won the British Open fewer times than any of the other majors — "only" three wins — he was seemingly always in contention in his prime. He finished second a record seven times. In one 15-year stretch (1966 through 1980), Nicklaus never finished lower than sixth in a British Open: three wins, six 2nds, two 3rds, one 4th, one 5th and one 6th.

Like the previous time (2000) the championship was played at St. Andrews, Tiger Woods was the champion in 2005. And like the previous time, he won by a wide margin, this time by five strokes. Woods opened 66-67 in the first two rounds, played solidly on the weekend, and was never really challenged.

It was a wire-to-wire win for Woods, and was his 10th career win in a major championship to this point. It also completed the Career Grand Slam a second time for Woods (meaning he had won all four of the professional majors at least twice each). At age 29, Woods was the first golfer to reach 10 career majors and a second Career Grand Slam before turning 30. Woods and Nicklaus are the only golfers to complete the career slam more than once.
