Notable notes: Ben Hogan defeated Ed "Porky" Oliver in the championship match by a 6-and-4 score. It was the first of Hogan's nine career major championship wins, although he had already won 30 times in "regular" PGA Tour tournaments. ... Hogan roared back in the afternoon 18 against Oliver after trailing 3-down following the morning 18. ... To reach the final, Hogan defeated Charles Weisner, Bill Heinlein, Art Bell, Frank Moore and Jimmy Demaret. ... Defending champ Byron Nelson fell to Oliver 1-down in the quarterfinals. This was the last time Nelson played the PGA Championship.
