The 2014 U.S. Women's Open was the 69th time this golf tournament was played. And this one is remembered as the site of Michelle Wie's first win in a major championship. She was the only golfer to finish under par, and won by two strokes.

Tournament dates: June 19-22, 2014

Leaders after third round: Michelle Wie and Amy Yang, 208

What Happened at the 2014 U.S. Women's Open

Michelle Wie had been contending in major championships since 2003, when she was 13 and played in the final grouping on Sunday at the Kraft Nabisco Championship. She was the 54-hole leader at both the 2005 and 2006 U.S. Women's Opens, falling short both times. That was during her amateur career.

Injuries slowed Wie's progress in her late teens, though, and it wasn't until 2009 that she earned her first LPGA win. She won again in 2010, then another fallow period followed. But she opened 2014 strong and earned her third LPGA win at the 2014 Lotte Championship in her native Hawaii.

She opened the 2014 U.S. Women's Open with a 68, trailing first-round leader Stacy Lewis by one. Wie took over the lead with another 68 in the second round. In the third round she shot 2-over 72, falling back to 2-under par and tying Amy Yang for the 54-hole lead.

In the final round, Yang quickly fell back. But Wie played pretty steady over the front nine, making all pars following a bogey on the first hole. It was Lewis who was on fire in Round 4. The No. 1-ranked player in the women's world rankings, Lewis carded five birdies in her first 10 holes.

Lewis got within one stroke of Wie's lead, but then encountered trouble. She bounced back with two late birdies to shoot 66 and become the leader in the clubhouse, but, out on the course, Wie was four ahead of Lewis.

Then Wie found trouble herself on the 16th hole, pushing her approach into wire grass in an area around bunkers short of the green. Wie took the 1-stroke penalty for an unplayable lie and dropped behind the bunkers. Her pitch to the green ran about 24 feet past the flag, and she ran her putt five feet long. But Wie knocked in the 5-footer to salvage her lead, which, after the double-bogey, was down to just one stroke.

But Wie calmly hit a solid tee shot to the middle of the 17th green, and then rolled in a 25-foot birdie. That pushed Wie's lead back to two strokes, and she made a 2-putt par on the 18th hole to close out the victory.
