Winners of The Players Championship: Full List Plus Playoffs

The Players Championship is the pre-eminent tournament in golf that is run by the PGA Tour. It is considered just a notch below the four major championships of men's professional golf in importance. Below is the list of all the golfers who've won The Players Championship, plus the playoff participants and scores in years when playoffs were necessary.

Sometimes called "the fifth major," The Players Championship is always played on the same golf course: The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass in Florida. That is the site of golf's most-famous island green.

The tournament was first played in 1974, and TPC Sawgrass has been the home course every year since 1982. Before that, The Players took place at Atlanta Country Club (1974); Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas (1975); Inverrary Country Club in Florida (1976); and Sawgrass Country Club in Florida (1977-81).

Players Championship Winners and Scores

Jack Nicklaus holds The Players Championship tournament record for most wins with three, all before the tournament moved to TPC Sawgrass.

Playoffs at The Players Championship

The Players Championship used a sudden-death playoff format through 2013. Beginning in 2014, the playoff format changed to a three-hole aggregate (16th, 17th, 18th holes). If the golfers are still tied after three holes, it reverts to sudden-death.
  • 1981 — The first playoff in The Players Championship was also the last time the tournament was played somewhere other than TPC Sawgrass. Raymond Floyd won this sudden-death playoff over Curtis Strange and Barry Jaeckel on the first playoff hole at Sawgrass Country Club.
  • 1987 — Sandy Lyle won the first playoff that took place at TPC Sawgrass. He beat Jeff Sluman on the third sudden-death hole.
  • 2008 — On the first sudden-death hole, which was the island green No. 17, Paul Goydos hit into the water, giving Sergio Garcia the victory.
  • 2011 — The last playoff using the sudden-death format. K.J. Choi defeated David Toms on the first extra hole.
  • 2015 — This was the first three-hole aggregate playoff at The Players Championship, but it had to continue into sudden-death. Rickie Fowler and Kevin Kisner finished the three holes still tied at 1-under par. The third man in the playoff, Sergio Garcia, was at even-par and knocked out after the three holes. Fowler and Kisner continued into sudden death, and Fowler birdied that first additional hole (fourth hole overall) to win.
