What Happened in the 1958 U.S. Women's Open
Mickey Wright, age 23, won the 1958 U.S. Women's Open by five strokes over runner-up Louise Suggs, and nobody else was within six strokes of her. It was Wright's first U.S. Women's Open victory, but she eventually claimed this trophy four times. She won again in 1959, becoming this major's first back-to-back champ, and added titles in 1961 and 1964.Earlier in 1958, Wright won the LPGA Championship (now called the Women's PGA Championship). She thus became the first golfer to win both the LPGA Championship and USWO in the same year. And as the winner of the 1952 U.S. Girls' Junior, Wright became the first golfer to win both the Girls' Junior and the USWO.
Wright's final score of 290 was 2-under-par on the par-73 golf course. It was also a new, 72-hole U.S. Women's Open scoring record (one she lowered again the following year). For Wright, this was the second of her 13 career wins in majors, and the seventh of her 82 career LPGA Tour victories.
Wright led wire-to-wire, starting with a first-round 74 (still tied for highest first-round score by an eventual winner). After 36 holes, she held a one-stroke lead over Fay Crocker, whose 68 in Round 2 was the second-lowest round in USWO Open history to that point. But Wright opened a 7-stroke lead following the third round, in which she scored 70 when nobody else in the field got lower than 73.
For Suggs, a two-time champ, it was the third of five times she finished runner-up in this major. And she did so again the following year, when Wright was again the winner.
