The 2020 Ryder Cup Captains

The captain for Team USA is Steve Stricker, and for Team Europe Padraig Harrington. It's the first time captaining in a Ryder Cup for both, although Stricker was captain of Team USA in the 2017 Presidents Cup.

Harrington played in six Ryder Cups from 1999 to 2010, compiling an overall record of 9-13-3. Stricker played in three Ryder Cups (2008, 2010, 2012) with an overall record of 3-7-1.

Stricker has selected Jim Furyk as vice-captain; Harrington named Robert Karlsson as his vice-captain.

How the Teams Are Picked for the 2020 Ryder Cup

Team USA selection consists of the top eight golfers on the United States Ryder Cup Points list, plus four captain's picks. Points for the point list are earned for every $1,000 made in specific events. Those events are 2019 majors, 2020 majors (winner gets double points, others who make the cut get half-points), WGC tournaments and The Players Championship in 2019 (half-points), and 2020 PGA Tour events (excluding opposite-field tournaments).

Qualification for Team Europe goes like this: the top four golfers on the Race to Dubai points list from Sept. 2019 through Sept. 2020; the top five remaining players on the European Tour's World Points list; plus three captain's picks. The World Points list is compiled from Official World Golf Ranking points from Sept. 2019 through Sept. 2020, with points earned in tournaments later in 2020 getting a 50-percent boost.

The leading players on the points lists can be viewed on RyderCup.com.

2020 Ryder Cup Format

  • Day 2: Four foursomes matches and four fourball matches
