What Happened in the 1960 U.S. Women's Open
Betsy Rawls was seven strokes off the lead at the midway point, but on the 36-hole final day she rallied to a one-stroke victory. Rawls previously won the U.S. Women's Open in 1951, 1953 and 1957, so the victory here made her a four-time champion — the first golfer to win the USWO four times. It was the seventh of Rawls' eight career wins in majors, and the 41st of her 55 career LPGA Tour victories.Mickey Wright, winner of the two previous U.S. Women's Opens, was the leader after the first and second rounds with back-to-back 71s, in both rounds the only sub-par scores of the day. Rawls opened 76-73 and was seven shots behind Wright at the tournament's mid-point.
But Rawls fired a 68 in the third round, which was three strokes better than any other score posted during the tournament. That moved her into a tie with Wright after 54 holes.
Wright faded badly in the final round with an 82. At first, it was Joyce Ziske who took advantage, forging a 2-stroke lead over Rawls after nine holes (63 holes total) of the final round. But Rawls scored 35 on the homeward nine to edge second-place Ziske by one stroke. Wright slipped to fifth place, seven behind Rawls.
According to the USGA, Wright was the first golfer in USWO history to lead the first three rounds but not win. But she came back the next year to claim the 1961 U.S. Women's Open. And when Wright added the 1964 U.S. Women's Open trophy, she joined Rawls as this major's only four-time champions.
Fifteen-year-old Judy Torluemke was the youngest player in the field. She finished in 24th place, earning low-amateur honors. She went on to a stellar LPGA Tour career, then a long television broadcasting career, under her married name, Judy Rankin.
Worcester Country Club, site of the men's 1925 U.S. Open, this year became the first golf course to host both the men's and women's U.S. Opens.
