2023 British Open Dates, Golf Course

The 2023 British Open will be the 151st time this tournament is played. The Open Championship is one of the four majors of men's professional golf. It is the oldest of the four, dating to 1860, and the one that falls last on the golf calendar each year.

2023 British Open dates: July 20-23, 2023
Golf course: Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England
Defending champion: Cameron Smith shot 64 in the final round to come from four strokes off the lead to win the 2022 British Open.

The R&A (Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews) is the organizing body for the Open Championship and is responsible for determining player pairings and tee times. Those are announced the week of the tournament. Ticket information, when it becomes available (usually during the previous year's Open), will be posted on theopen.com.

2023 British Open Links: Royal Liverpool

Royal Liverpool (often referred to in older references by its place, Hoylake) is one of the English links in the Open rota of golf courses. It first hosted the Open in 1897, and most recently in 2014. Here is the list of Open winners at Royal Liverpool:
  • 2014 — Rory McIlroy, 271
  • 2006 — Tiger Woods, 270
  • 1967 — Roberto De Vicenzo, 278
  • 1956 — Peter Thomson, 286
  • 1947Fred Daly, 293
  • 1936 — Alf Padgham, 287
  • 1930 — Bobby Jones, 291
  • 1924 — Walter Hagen, 301
  • 1913 — J.H. Taylor, 304
  • 1907 — Arnaud Massy, 312
  • 1902 — Sandy Herd, 307
  • 1897 — Harold Hilton, 314

Royal Liverpool has also been the site of the Amateur Championship 18 times (most recently in 2000, won by Mikko Ilonen); the Women's British Open once (in 2012, won by Jiyai Shin); the Women's British Amateur three times, Walker Cup twice and Curtis Cup once.

One quirk about Royal Liverpool's use for the Open: The R&A changes the order of the holes for the pros' rounds. In the two most recent Opens at Hoylake, play began on the 17th hole and ended on the 16th hole (players tee off on 17, go to 18, then to 1, 2, etc., and end on 16), rather starting on No. 1 and ending on No. 18.
