What Happened in the 1992 U.S. Women's Open

Patty Sheehan won an 18-hole playoff against Juli Inkster to claim the trophy in the 1992 U.S. Women's Open. It happened two years after Sheehan broke down in tears at the end of the 1990 USWO, in which she blew a 9-stroke lead over the final two rounds.

Sheehan cried at the end of the playoff here, too, but, she said afterward, "Today they are tears of joy."

Inkster and Sheehan entered the fourth round tied for the lead at 211. Then they both scored 69s. But it was Sheehan who forced the playoff with birdies on the 71st and 72nd holes.

In the Monday playoff, Sheehan birdied the first hole and never gave up that lead. Her lead was two at the turn, and five with two holes left. Sheehan wound up scoring 72 to Inkster's 74.

It was Sheehan's first U.S. Women's Open victory (she won again in 1994) and her third overall major championship win. It was her 29th career win on the LPGA Tour. Inkster, already a two-time USWO winner, finished in the Top 10 at all four women's majors in 1992, and also lost in a playoff (to Dottie Pepper) at the 1992 Nabisco Dinah Shore.

Twenty-one-year-old amateur Annika Sorenstam made her U.S. Women's Open and major championship debuts here. Sorenstam, who went on to win this major three times, made the cut and tied for 63rd place.

This was the first time the U.S. Women's Open, or any of the LPGA majors, was played at Oakmont Country Club.
