Winners of U.S. Senior Open, Senior PGA Championship in Same Year

The Senior PGA Championship and U.S. Senior Open are two of the tournaments that make up the "senior majors." They are also the two oldest of those senior majors, dating to 1937 in the case of the Senior PGA.

But the U.S. Senior Open wasn't created until 1980. So only since 1980 has it been possible to win both these senior majors in the same year. Possible, but not very common — only a handful of golfers so far have pulled it off.

These are the golfers who won both the U.S. Senior Open and the Senior PGA Championship in the same calendar year:

  • Gary Player, 1988: The first golfer to pull off the U.S. Senior Open-Senior PGA Championship double in the same year was Player in 1988. Player first won the Senior PGA, then called the "PGA Seniors' Championship," by three strokes over Chi Chi Rodriguez. Then he won the U.S. Senior Open in an 18-hole playoff against Bob Charles, scoring 68 to Charles' 70. In-between, Player also won the 1988 Senior British Open, which at the time was not counted as a senior major (although it is today).

  • Jack Nicklaus, 1991: No surprise that Nicklaus was the second golfer to join this exclusive club, after his buddy Player. Nicklaus' win in the 1991 Senior PGA was by six strokes over runner-up Bruce Crampton, who also finished second to Nicklaus in four of the regular majors. In the 1991 Open, Nicklaus beat Chi Chi Rodriguez in an 18-hole playoff, 65 to 69.

  • Hale Irwin, 1998: Irwin's victory in the 1998 Senior PGA was his third consecutive in that senior major. And it was by seven strokes over runner-up Larry Nelson. Irwin then won a much-closer U.S. Senior Open, beating second-place Vicente Fernandez by one.

  • Roger Chapman, 2012: Chapman won both these majors in 2012, but had only one other Top 10 finish in any of the senior majors. His victory in the 2012 Senior PGA was by two over John Cook. In the U.S. Senior Open, Chapman won by two over a quartet of second-place finishers: Fred Funk, Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman and Corey Pavin.

  • Colin Montgomerie, 2014: After famously going the entirety of his highly successful pre-senior career without winning a major, Montgomerie won three senior majors. The first two happened in 2014. At the Senior PGA Championship, he won by four over Tom Watson. At the U.S. Senior Open, Monty beat Gene Sauers in a playoff.

  • Richard Bland, 2024: Bland won the Senior PGA by three over runner-up Richard Green. At the U.S. Senior Open, he defeated Hiroyuki Fujita in a playoff.
