Every Hole-in-One in Masters Tournament History
There was an ace in the very first Masters Tournament played, and they've been scoring holes-in-one in The Masters ever since. Just not a ton of them — it's still true that the majority of Masters played pass without any aces made. But below we show you all the aces that have been scored at Augusta National during the tournament, first arranged by hole, and then listed year-by-year.
Let's answer two, very common questions first:
Who made the first hole-in-one in The Masters? That was amateur Ross "Sandy" Sommerville in the inaugural 1934 Masters, during the second round.
Has anyone made more than one ace in The Masters? No — not yet. Every Masters hole-in-one listed below was recorded by a different golfer. But one golfer — Louis Oosthuizen — has scored both an ace and a double eagle in Masters play. (See List of Double Eagles in The Masters.)
The most holes-in-one in a single Masters in three, in both 2004 and 2016. The Augusta National par-3 hole with the fewest aces is No. 4, where just one hole-in-hole has been made. And the longest gap between Masters aces is 16 years, from Charles Coody's 1972 ace to Curtis Strange's 1988 ace.
A few things you'll notice in the following lists: First, that most of the Masters holes-in-one have happened on the 16th hole. There have been more aces on the 16th than on Augusta National's other par-3 holes (No. 4, No. 6, No. 12) combined.
And the frequency has picked up in the 2000s. Only 14 aces total were scored in The Masters prior to the year 2000 over a span of 66 years. But it took only 17 years for the 14th ace of the 21st century to happen.
You can also see a change in club selection as golfers have added length over time. In 2019 a 9-iron was used for the first time for a 16th-hole ace. It likely won't be long until we see the first hole-in-one with a wedge during The Masters.
