1972 Curtis Cup Winner and Match Scores

The 1972 Curtis Cup was the 17th time this tournament was played. Following Team USA's victory, the all-time standings were 13 wins for Team USA, two for GB&I, and two ties.

Final Score: United States 10, Great Britain & Ireland 8

Dates Played: June 9-10, 1972

Location: Western Gailes Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland

Team Captains: Jean Ashley Crawford for Team USA and Frances Stephens Smith for Team GB&I

Team Rosters:

  • USA: Beth Barry, Laura Baugh, Jane Bastanchury Booth, Martha Wilkinson Kirouac, Barbara McIntire, Lancy Smith, Hollis Stacy
  • GB&I: Mary Everard, Diane Robb Frearson, Beverley Huke, Mary McKenna, Dinah Oxley, Kathryn Phillips, Belle McCorkindale Robertson, Mickey Walker
Notes: The 2-point margin of victory here made this the closest outcome since the 1958 Curtis Cup, which ended in a tie.

The Day 1 singles session was highlighted by the match between the reigning British Ladies Amateur winner, Mickey Walker, and reigning U.S. Women's Amateur winner, Laura Baugh. Baugh was 2-down after 10 holes, but squared the match by the 15th hole. It ended in a tie. Baugh, 17 years old, was, at the time, the youngest player in Curtis Cup history.

In the Day 2 foursomes, the American team of Hollis Stacy and Beth Barry came back from 4-down with six holes to play to halve their match. Team USA led by two points following the morning foursomes.

In the final singles session, Walker got GB&I off to a hot start with an opening win, Mary McKenna won the second match and Mary Everard won the fourth match for GB&I. Only Baugh, in the third match, earned a point for USA out of the first four singles games, and the score was tied 8-8. But the Americans won the final two matches to secure the 2-point victory.

Mickey Walker won 3.5 of a possible 4 points for GB&I and was the only undefeated player on either side. This was the only Curtis Cup played by Walker, but she went on to captain Europe's Solheim Cup team four times.

Kathryn Phillips, who was named to GB&I in 1970 but did not play that year, got into a singles match this year and in so doing became the first left-handed golfer to play in this tournament.
