2012 Ryder Cup Winner, Match Scores, Player Records

The 2012 Ryder Cup was the 39th time this match play tournament between teams representing Europe and the United States was played. Following the European victory, the all-time standings were 25 wins for Team USA, 12 for Team Europe, with two draws.

Final Score: Europe 14.5, United States 13.5

Dates Played: September 28-30, 2012

Golf Course: Medinah Country Club (Course No. 3) in Medinah, Illinois

Team Captains: Jose Maria Olazabal for Europe (Thomas Bjorn, Darren Clarke, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Paul McGinley vice captains); Davis Love III for the United States (Fred Couples, Mike Hulbert, Jeff Sluman, Scott Verplank vice captains)

Team Rosters:

  • Europe — Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Paul Lawrie, Graeme McDowell, Francesco Molinari, Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Peter Hanson, Martin Kaymer, Nicolas Colsaerts, Ian Poulter
  • USA — Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson, Jason Dufner, Keegan Bradley, Webb Simpson, Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, Brandt Snedeker, Dustin Johnson
Match Notes: Team Europe was led by Jose Maria Olazabal, who, as a golfer, formed half the fabled "Spanish Armada" with Seve Ballesteros — the most successful pairing in Ryder Cup history. Ballesteros, whose fiery talent helped turn the Ryder Cup around for Europe, died a year earlier. European players wore a patch with Seve's silhouette and had it embroidered on their golf bags. Perhaps that helped charge their final-day comeback to win the 2012 Ryder Cup.

In the 1999 Ryder Cup, it was Team USA that came back, in the final-day singles, from a 10-6 deficit to win. Here, it was Team Europe that pulled off that comeback.

Trailing 10-6 entering singles, Europe's Luke Donald, Ian Poulter, Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Paul Lawrie reeled off five consecutive wins to start the singles session. Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood added two more.

That brought the events to the second-to-last match, Martin Kaymer vs. Steve Stricker. And Kaymer secured the point that kept the Cup in Team Europe's hands when he sank a 6-foot putt on the final hole to win his match.

Stricker, a captain's pick, went 0-4-0. He and Tiger Woods partnered in three doubles matches and lost all three. Another captain's pick, Ian Poulter, went 4-0-0.
