2021 PGA Championship Winner and Scores

The 2021 PGA Championship was the 103rd time this tournament was played, but it produced a first: Phil Mickelson became the first golfer at least 50 years old to win a major championship.

Where it was played: Kiawah Island Golf Resort (The Ocean Course) in Kiawah Island, South Carolina

Tournament dates: May 20-23, 2021

Leader after first round: Corey Conners, 67

Leaders after second round: Phil Mickelson and Louis Oosthuizen, 138

Leader after third round: Phil Mickelson, 209

What Happened at the 2021 PGA Championship

Fifty-year-old Phil Mickelson took a one-stroke lead into the final round, then held on for the two-stroke victory over runners-up Louis Oosthuizen and Brooks Koepka. Mickelson and Koepka had roller-coaster starts in the final round and traded the lead a couple times on the front nine through birdies and bogeys. But Mickelson started the back nine with a birdie on the 10th hole and added another on the 16th that produced a three-shot cushion.

It was Mickelson's 45th career PGA Tour win, but first since 2019. It was his sixth major championship win, but first since 2013. He broke a record held since 1968 by Julius Boros for oldest major championship winner, becoming the first 50-year-old (the first older than 48) to win a men's major.

Mickelson made five birdies on the back nine of his second round to card a 69. That pushed him into a share of the 36-hole lead with Oosthuizen. Koepka, a 2-time PGA Championship winner, was in third, one stroke behind.

After Mickelson started the third round with four birdies on the front nine, plus another birdie on the 10th hole, he had a 5-stroke lead. But after hitting into water on the 13th and making double bogey, Mickelson's lead was back down to one. And that is how the third round ended, with Mickelson leading Koepka by one (and Oosthuizen by two).

Koepka took the lead after a two-shot swing on the first hole of the final round. But Mickelson regained the lead on No. 2, and never trailed after that.
