Phil Mickelson's Record in Playoffs (With Scores)

What kind of playoff record does Phil Mickelson have over his professional golf career? A pretty good one: Mickelson has won twice as many PGA Tour playoffs as he's lost.

On the PGA Tour, Mickelson has played in 12 playoffs and won eight of them. That makes his record 8-4, a 66.7% winning percentage. On the European Tour, Mickelson's playoff record is 3-1.

Mickelson has never taken part in a playoff at a major championship, and has never played (as a pro) an 18-hole or multi-hole, aggregate score playoff. All of the playoffs listed below were sudden-death formats.

Mickelson's PGA Tour Playoff Record: 8 wins, 4 losses

These are the 12 PGA Tour playoffs played by Phil Mickelson:
  • 1994 Mercedes Championships: In his very first professional playoff, Mickelson beat Fred Couples with a par on the second playoff hole.
  • 1996 Phoenix Open: defeated Justin Leonard with a birdie on the third hole.
  • 2000 BellSouth Classic: beat Gary Nicklaus by sinking an 18-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole. This is the closest Nicklaus (yes, son of Jack) came to winning on the PGA Tour.
  • 2000 Byron Nelson Classic: This was a three-way playoff in which Mickelson was eliminated on the second hole. Jesper Parnevik won it on the third hole over Davis Love III.
  • 2001 Buick Invitational: Also a three-way playoff, vs. Frank Lickliter II and Davis Love III. Love was eliminated on the second hole, and Mickelson then won on the third hole despite hitting his drive into a canyon. He hit a provisional and wanted to play it, but a spectator found his first drive. So Mickelson had to re-tee for another drive. His third (counting the provisional) drive also headed toward the canyon, but stayed out after hitting a tree. He wound up with a double bogey on the hole. But Lickliter had his own troubles on the hole, starting with also hitting into the canyon. Lickliter wound up three-putting from 12 feet for triple bogey, giving Mickelson the win.
  • 2002 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic: defeated David Berganio Jr. on the first hole, 4 to 5.
  • 2004 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic: beat Skip Kendall with a birdie on the first hole.
  • 2005 BellSouth Classic: Mickelson emerged with the win from a 5-man playoff. Arjun Atwal and Brandt Jobe were knocked out on the first hole. Jose Maria Olazabal went out on the third hole. Mickelson then won it over Rich Beem on the fourth playoff hole.
  • 2007 Nissan Open: Mickelson and Charles Howell III matched pars on first two extra holes, then Howell won with a par on the third hole when Mickelson bogeyed.
  • 2008 FBR Open: lost to J.B. Holmes when Holmes birdied the first hole.
  • 2012 Northern Trust Open: Lost a 3-way playoff with Keegan Bradley and Bill Haas when Haas rolled in a 45-foot birdie on the second hole.
  • 2018 WGC Mexico Championship: Mickelson's most-recent (and probably last) PGA Tour playoff happened at age 47 and gave him his first win in five years. He beat Justin Thomas won with a first-hole par.

Mickelson's European Tour Playoff Record: 3 wins, 1 loss

One of his three wins was in the 2018 WGC Mexico Championship, already listed above. Mickelson's other three European Tour playoffs:
  • 2007 Scottish Open: Mickelson lost to Gregory Havret on the first extra hole.
  • 2007 HSBC Champions: Before this tournament was co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour as a WGC event, Mickelson won it on the second playoff hole over Ross Fisher and Lee Westwood.
  • 2013 Scottish Open: defeated Branden Grace with a birdie on the first hole.
