What Happened in the 2006 U.S. Women's Open

Annika Sorenstam and Pat Hurst finished 72 holes tied at 284, then Sorenstam won an 18-hole playoff to claim the championship. It was Sorenstam's third victory in the U.S. Women's Open, having previously won in 1995 and 1996. It was also the 10th major championship victory of her career, and the last; and the 68th of her 72 career wins on the LPGA Tour.

Sorenstam and Hurst were among four co-leaders following the first round, and then shared the 36-hole lead. In the third round, Sorenstam scored 73 and Hurst 75. Sorenstam still shared the lead, with Brittainy Lincicome and Michelle Wie, but Hurst dropped two strokes off the pace.

In the final round, Sorenstam had a 71 and Hurst a 69 to produce their tie. Wie scored 73 and finished in a three-way tie for third; Lincicome fell back with a 78. Sorenstam and Hurst were even through 14 holes of the final round, then Sorenstam birdied No. 15 to go one up. But she bogeyed the 17th to fall back into the tie.

In the 18-hole playoff, Sorenstam birdied the first hole and Hurst bogeyed it, which set the tone. By the sixth hole, Sorenstam was four ahead. She got as many as six strokes in front before finally winning by four, 70 to 74.

This was the final U.S. Women's Open that used the 18-hole playoff format. The USGA decided the next year to switch to a 3-hole, aggregate score format for playoffs, a format that was first used in 2011.
