What Happened in the 2007 U.S. Women's Open

Cristie Kerr took the lead with a 66 in the third round, then held on in the final round to claim the 2007 U.S. Women's Open and her first major championship.

Kerr began the tournament with rounds of 71 and 72 and was outside the Top 10 at the halfway mark. Her third-round 66 vaulted her up the leaderboard, putting her one stroke in front after 54 holes. The second-place golfers at that point were Lorena Ochoa, Jiyai Shin and Morgan Pressel. Angela Park, the first- and second-round leader, was in third, two behind Kerr.

Pressel had a 77 and Shin a 74 in the final round, falling off the pace. Kerr and Ochoa were tied at 4-under over the first four holes of the back nine. But Kerr birdied the 14th to move one in front. Kerr parred out from there while her pursuers each had bogeys. Ochoa bogeyed the 17th hole to fall two behind; Park closed with a birdie, but only after bogeying the 16th and 17th holes.

Kerr wound up winning by two strokes over Ochoa and Park. The victory was Kerr's 10th win on the LPGA Tour and her first in a major. She eventually won 20 LPGA titles including a second major, the 2010 LPGA Championship.

Co-runner-up Angela Park, 18 years old, was the LPGA Rookie of the Year in 2007. But within just a couple years of her second-place finish here, Park quit the tour, citing burnout, and took a job as a desk clerk in a hotel. She made a couple comeback attempts years later, but never made it back on tour.

Future LPGA major winner Lexi Thompson made her tournament and major championship debut here. She scored 76-82 and missed the cut. But, then, she was only 12 years old.
