2024 Solheim Cup: Dates, Golf Course

The 2024 Solheim Cup will be the 19th time this three-day, United States-vs.-Europe team competition is played. Featuring top women professional golfers from the LPGA Tour and Ladies European Tour, the Solheim Cup is played every other year. Except in 2024, when it takes place just one year after the 2023 Solheim Cup. The all-time standings going into 2023 are 10 wins for Team USA, seven wins for Team Europe, plus one tie.

2024 Solheim Cup dates: September 13-15, 2024
Golf course: Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia
Captains: Suzann Pettersen for Team Europe and Stacy Lewis for Team USA
Defending champion: Team Europe holds the cup after winning in 2021 and halving the 2023 match, 14-14.
Ticket info: Tickets are on sale on the official tournament website.

Why is the 2024 Solheim Cup being played just one year after the previous one, rather than two years as per usual? When the Solheim Cup was founded, it was played in even-numbered years. This choice was made so the Solheim Cup and Ryder Cup (which was played in odd-numbered years at the time) would not take place in the same year.

But the Ryder Cup switched to even years when the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the U.S. pushed the 2001 competition back to 2002. The Solheim Cup, at that point, switched to odd-numbered years.

In 2020, however, the COVID-19 pandemic caused another shift by the Ryder Cup, which delayed its 2020 competion to 2021. That put the Ryder Cup in conflict with the Solheim Cup again. So, after playing in 2023, the Solheim Cup will shift back to even-numbered years — and avoiding the Ryder Cup — by playing again after just one year, in 2024.

Captains and Team Selection

Both teams, Europe and USA, will include 12 golfers. For Team Europe, all golfers must have Ladies European Tour membership. Team Europe will be comprised of the top two golfers on the LET Solheim Cup Points list; the top six golfers in the world rankings; plus four captain's picks. For Team USA, all golfers must be LPGA Tour members. Team USA will be comprised of the top seven players on the U.S. Solheim Cup points list; the next top two golfers from the world rankings; plus three captain's picks.

The team captains are Suzann Pettersen for Europe and Stacy Lewis for America. Both reprise their roles as captains in the 2023 Solheim Cup. View the list of all Solheim Cup captains.

2024 Solheim Cup Golf Course: RTJ Golf Club

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia, had a big role in the early history of the Presidents Cup, but the 2024 Solheim Cup will be the first major women's tournament played there. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1991, the course was the site of the 1994, 1996, 2000 and 2005 Presidents Cups. It also hosted the PGA Tour's Quicken Loans National in 2015.

Competition Format

See The Solheim Cup Format Explained for full details, but the basic format is this:
  • Day 1: One session of four foursomes matches, and another session of four fourball matches, 8 points total at stake.
  • Day 2: One session of four foursomes matches, and another session of four fourball matches, 8 points total at stake.
  • Day 3: 12 singles (one vs. one) matches, 12 points at stake. The tournament runs on a Friday-Sunday schedule. The United States and Europe teams are comprised of 12 golfers each.
