1993 U.S. Senior Open Winner and Scores

The 1993 U.S. Senior Open was the 14th time this major championship of men's senior (ages 50 and over) golf was played. And for the second time, the winner was Jack Nicklaus.

Winner: Jack Nicklaus, 278

Where it was played: Cherry Hills Country Club in Englewood, Colorado

Tournament dates: July 8-11, 1993

Leader after first round: Chi Chi Rodriguez, 67

Leader after second round: Chi Chi Rodriguez, 137

Leader after third round: Jack Nicklaus, 208

What Happened in the 1993 U.S. Senior Open

Jack Nicklaus outdueled Tom Weiskopf down the stretch to win the 1993 U.S. Senior Open by one stroke. It was Nicklaus' first victory in two years, since he won the 1991 U.S. Senior Open.

Chi Chi Rodriguez was the leader after both the first and second rounds, with Nicklaus trailing by one and four strokes, respectively. But a 67 in Round 3 moved Nicklaus atop the leaderboard (Rodriguez scored 75 that round but finished tied for fourth).

Nicklaus' lead going into the final round was one over Dale Douglass, two over Kermit Zarley, and four over Larry Ziegler, Tom Weiskopf and Rodriguez.

It was Weiskopf who emerged as Nicklaus' final-round challenger. When Nicklaus reached the 16th tee, he and Weiskopf were tied for the lead. But Nicklaus then birdied the hole to move in front.

When Nicklaus got to the final green, he needed to two-putt from 35 feet to win. And that's what he did.

Nicklaus was the third golfer to win multiple USSO titles, following Miller Barber and Gary Player. Nicklaus was the first golfer to have multiple wins in each of the U.S. Open and U.S. Senior Open.

And in one way, the 1993 U.S. Senior Open was the end of an era: It was the occasion of Nicklaus' final USGA championship victory. Nicklaus won eight USGA championships (two U.S. Amateurs, four U.S. Opens, two U.S. Senior Opens) over his career.
