Golfers Who Won Chevron Championship, U.S. Women's Open in Same Year

The Chevron Championship and the U.S. Women's Open are two of the major championships of women's pro golf. Winning one of them in any given year is a big achievement. Winning them both in the same year? That's something very few golfers have ever done.

The U.S. Women's Open was founded in 1946. The Chevron Championship (whose previous names include Colgate Dinah Shore, Nabisco Dinah Shore, Kraft Nabisco Championship and ANA Inspiration) dates to 1972, but wasn't classified as an LPGA major until 1983. So only since 1983 has it been possible to win both these tournaments as majors in the same year.

List: Chevron Championship/U.S. Women's Open Single-Season Winners

Only three golfers so far have won both these titles in the same year since the Chevron was elevated to major championship status:

Betsy King, 1990

King became the first golfer to achieve the Chevron/U.S. Women's Open single-season major double in 1990 (at which time the Chevron was known as the Nabisco Dinah Shore). These were the third and fourth, respectively, wins in majors for King, who had already won each of these majors previously. And she went on to win the Chevron again in 1997.

In the 1990 Chevron, King won by two strokes over runners-up Shirley Furlong and Kathy Postlewait. In the 1990 U.S. Women's Open, she beat second-place Patty Sheehan by one.

Karrie Webb, 2000

In the 2000 Chevron (then named the Kraft Nabisco Championship), Webb beat second-place Dottie Pepper by a whopping 10 strokes. That was a record (and still is) for largest margin of victory in this major.

In the 2000 U.S. Women's Open, Webb again pulled away to a large margin of victory: She won by five over runners-up Cristie Kerr and Meg Mallon. Webb also won the 2001 U.S. Women's Open and the 2006 Chevron Championship.

Inbee Park, 2013

The Chevron and U.S. Women's Open were two of three majors Park claimed in 2013. She also won the Women's PGA Championship that year, which also gets her on the list of golfers who won the USWO and WPGA in the same year.

She won the Chevron Championship by four over runner-up So Yeon Ryu. Park claimed the 2013 U.S. Women's Open (her second USWO title) by four strokes, as well, over second-place I.K. Kim.

Before The Chevron Was a Major

What about the time period (1972-82) before the Chevron Championship was elevated to major championship status? Did anyone win both it and the USWO in the same year? Yes, one golfer:
  • Sandra Palmer, 1975: In 1975, the Chevron was known as the Colgate-Dinah Shore Winner's Circle, and Palmer won it by one over Kathy McMullen. She is not credited with a major championship victory for that one, however. But she is for winning the 1975 U.S. Women's Open, which Palmer did by four strokes over JoAnne Carner, Nancy Lopez (still an amateur) and Sandra Post.
