How Many Golfers Won U.S. Open, Players Championship in Same Year?

The U.S. Open is one of the four major championships in men's professional golf, while The Players Championship is the biggest tournament run by the PGA Tour and is nicknamed "the fifth major." How many golfers have won both these prestigious tournaments in the same calendar year?

Not many! In fact, only one so far:

  • Martin Kaymer, 2014
In May of 2014, Kaymer claimed the first half of this double, winning The Players Championship. Kaymer opened The Players with a 63, and he held or shared the lead after each round. In the end, he won by a single stroke over second-place Jim Furyk.

A month later, Kaymer added the 2014 U.S. Open trophy, becoming the first — and so far only — golfer to win both these tournaments in the same year. This time, Kaymer won wire-to-wire without any ties, the outright leader following each round. He was the first golfer in the history of any men's major to score 65 or less in both the first and second rounds, and his 130 total after two rounds was a new 36-hole U.S. Open record. Kaymer won by eight strokes over runners-up Rickie Fowler and Erik Compton.

What is the closest anyone else has come to pulling off a Players Championship/U.S. Open, single-season double? In 2025, J.J. Spaun got into a playoff at The Players Championship, but lost that playoff to Rory McIlroy. Two months later Spaun won the 2025 U.S. Open.
