What Happened in the 2023 U.S. Senior Open

Bernhard Langer won the 2023 U.S. Senior Open by two strokes, his second victory in this major. And it was a record-setting performance in multiple ways.

At age 65 — 65 years, 10 months, 6 days to be exact — Langer became the U.S. Senior Open's oldest champion. He was eight years older than the previous record-holder. And he broke his own record as the oldest Champions Tour winner.

It was his 46th career win on the Champions Tour, breaking Hale Irwin's record of 45 wins. And it was his 12th career win in a senior major, also best-ever.

And finally, Langer's win this year came 13 years after his previous victory in the 2010 U.S. Senior Open. That is the longest gap between wins in this event's history, the previous record being just four years.

Langer trailed first-round leader Rod Pampling by three, but took the lead with a 68 in the second round. He added another 68 in the third round and held a two-stroke edge over Jerry Kelly going into the final round, with Steve Stricker three back.

In the final round Langer carded a 70 to finish at 7-under 277. Stricker scored 69 to pass Kelly (71) by one for second place. It was the second consecutive runner-up finish for Stricker in the U.S. Senior Open.

Langer won by two strokes, but it was actually a more comfortable win than that margin implies. He started the final round with birdies on the first two holes and three of the first five, and his lead during the round was as large as seven strokes. He still led by six after 15 holes, and took a three-stroke lead to the final hole.
