2024 U.S. Senior Open Winner and Scores

The 2024 U.S. Senior Open was the 44th time this tournament was played. Following four playoff holes, Richard Bland emerged the winner.

Winner: Richard Bland, 267

Where it was played: Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island

Tournament dates: June 27-July 1, 2024

Leaders after first round: Hiroyuki Fujita, Richard Green, 63

Leader after second round: Hiroyuki Fujita, 129

Leader after third round: Hiroyuki Fujita, 196

What Happened in the 2024 U.S. Senior Open

Hiroyuki Fujita shared or held the outright lead after each of the first three rounds. But Richard Bland came from five strokes off the lead at the start of the final round to win the trophy afer the two golfers faced off in a playoff.

It was Bland's U.S. Senior Open debut. But it wasn't his first victory in a senior major championship: He won the Senior PGA Championship five weeks earlier. That's how he got into the field for the U.S. Senior Open — Bland hadn't even entered.

Fujita and Richard Green shared the first-round lead, then Fujita went in front by one over Green after the second round. Bland and Steve Stricker were three behind.

Fujita led by two following the third round at 196, with Stricker in second. Green was three behind and Bland was in fifth place at 201, five back.

But in the final round, Bland scored 66 and Fijita 71, and they tied at 13-under 267. (Fujita reached 16-under at one point in the final round.)

The two entered into a 2-hole, aggregate score playoff, but each scored 4-4. So they continued into sudden-death holes. They matched scores again on the next. But finally, on the second sudden-death hole and fourth playoff hole overall, Bland won with a par when Fujita bogeyed.

Bland played the final three rounds in 199 strokes, tying the then-tournament record for lowest score over the last 54 holes. And his comeback from five strokes down after 54 holes tied for second-largest final-round comeback to that point in a U.S. Senior Open.

Something happened in the second round that had never happened before in any USGA championship: a golfer made holes-in-one on back-to-back holes. Frank Bensel Jr., a teaching pro who played his way into the 2024 U.S. Senior Open through qualifying, first aced the 173-yard fourth hole at Newport Country Club. And then, with another par-3 hole immediately at No. 5, Bensel aced that one, too, from 202 yards. Back-to-back aces had never happened before in this tournament or any other national championship (junior, regular or senior, men or women) run by the USGA.
