The 2022 U.S. Senior Open was the 42nd time this major championship of men's senior (50-and-over) golf was played. Padraig Harrington took a big lead into the final round, then had to hold on for the win.

What Happened in the 2022 U.S. Senior Open
Padraig Harrington won the 2022 U.S. Senior Open by one stroke over Steve Stricker. The two golfers battled almost a year after they had last opposed one another — as captains of the two squads in the 2021 Ryder Cup (Stricker was the winner in that matchup).The tournament started with 68-year-old Jay Haas beating his age by one to share the first-round lead at 67. But Harrington took over from that point, firing a 65 in Round 2. After 36 holes, Harrington led Stricker by one.
Harrington added a 66 in the third round to open a five-stroke lead (tied for third-largest 54-hole lead to this point in the tournament's history). But his lead over Stricker, who scored 73 in Round 3, was eight. And it turned out Harrington needed all of that.
In final round it was Stricker who was on fire, with a 65, and Harrington who didn't have his best, scoring 72. Stricker birdied the 14th hole to get within one of Harrington, but Harrington then rolled in a 30-foot birdie putt on the 15th to get the lead back to two. In the end, after Stricker birdied the last hole, Harrington's winning margin was one stroke.
A tournament record was set in the third round by Ken Tanigawa, with six consecutive birdies (holes 7-12) at Saucon Valley Country Club. It was the third time the U.S. Senior Open was played at Saucon Valley, making it the first course to host this tournament three times.
