2028 British Open Dates, Golf Course

The 2028 British Open will be the 156th edition of this oldest major championship — it dates to 1860 — in men's professional golf. Officially named The Open Championship, the tournament is run by the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews (the R&A).

2028 British Open dates: August 3-6, 2028
Golf course: Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club in Lytham St. Annes, Lancashire, England
Tickets: Attending the British Open with a standard ticket requires entering a ticket lottery. The lottery usually opens for registration during the previous year's Open (e.g., the ticket lottery for the 2028 Open will begin accepting entries around the time of the 2027 Open). Those willing to spend more can investigate hospitality and "enhanced experience" options to directly secure tickets. See the Tickets section of theopen.com, where information will be posted when it becomes available.

The Open is usually played in mid-July, but in 2028 will take place the first week of August. It was moved to August to avoid conflicting with the 2028 Summer Olympic Games. This will be the first British Open played in August since 1893.

Players in the 2028 Open Championship

Players get into the field through a combination of automatic qualifying criteria, along with qualifying tournaments played around the world. Information on qualification methods is available here.

Groupings and tee times for the first two rounds of the 2028 British Open will be announced by the R&A on the Tuesday preceding the first round of play.

2028 Open Links: Royal Lytham & St. Annes

Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club, on the western coast of England, will be hosting its 12th Open Championship in 2028. The club dates to 1886, and the current course (redesigned by Harry Colt in 1919) to 1897.

For daily play, the links tips out at 7,118 yards, with a par of 70. For its last Open in 2012, the course was actually shorter at 7,086 yards.

Seve Ballesteros won two Opens at Royal Lytham & St. Annes, and among the other Open champions here are Ernie Els, Gary Player and Peter Thomson. Bobby Jones won the first Open on this links in 1926, and that was also the first of Jones' three Open Championship victories.
