Golfers Who Won Women's PGA, Women's British Open in Same Year
How many golfers have won both the Women's PGA Championship and the Women's British Open — two of the majors of women's professional golf — in the same year? It's a short list: So far, only three golfers have pulled off that single-season double.
The Women's PGA Championship dates to 1955 (and was known from then through 2014 as the LPGA Championship). The Women's British Open dates to 1976, but is only counted as one of the LPGA's five majors from 2001 forward.
These are the three golfers who've managed this feat thus far:
Annika Sorenstam, 2003
The first golfer to pull off the Women's PGA/Women's British Open double was Sorenstam in 2003, winning one in a playoff and the other by one stroke. The playoff was in the 2003 Women's PGA Championship, where she finished 72 holes tied with Grace Park. The playoff was sudden-death, and Sorenstam won it with a par on the first extra hole. Nearly two months later in the Women's British Open, Sorenstam trailed the third-round leader by two strokes. But a 70 in the final round gave her a one-shot victory over second-place Se Ri Pak.
Yani Tseng, 2011
Tseng added her name to the list in 2011 with big wins in both majors. After opening with a 66 in the Women's PGA Championship, Tseng won wire-to-wire. She led by five following Round 3, and won by a whopping 10 strokes. In the Women's British Open, she was two strokes behind after three rounds, but she wound up winning by four. And that WBO victory was her second in a row, making her the first golfer in the tournament's major-championship era to win the Women's British Open back-to-back.
Inbee Park, 2015
In 2015, Inbee Park became the most-recent golfer to accomplish the WPGA/WBO single-season double. Park turned a two-stroke, third-round lead in the Women's PGA Championship into a five-shot victory over second-place Sei Young Kim. In the Women's British Open, Park won by three strokes over runner-up Jin Young Ko.Related articles:
