2019 British Open: Winner and Final Scores

The 2019 British Open was 148th time this major was played. It took place in Northern Ireland and an Irish golfer won it.

Winner: Shane Lowry, 269

Where it was played: Royal Portrush Golf Club (Dunluce Course) in Portrush, County Antrim, Northern Ireland

Tournament dates: July 18-21, 2019

Leader after first round: J.B. Holmes, 66

Leader after second round: J.B. Holmes and Shane Lowry, 134

Leader after third round: Shane Lowry, 197

Notable Notes: This was the second Open Championship played at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, and Shane Lowry became the second Republic of Ireland golfer (after Padraig Harrington) to win the Open. (The 1951 Open, won by Max Faulkner, was the first at Royal Portrush.)

Lowry was one off the lead following a first-round 67. Another 67 in Round 2 tied him for the lead with J.B. Holmes. In the third round, Lowry scored 63 to move four strokes in front. His three-round total of 197 set a tournament record for lowest opening 54-hole score. The second-place golfer going into the final round was Tommy Fleetwood, and at the end of the round Lowry had a six-stroke win over second-place Fleetwood.

In the first round, 2001 British Open winner David Duval carded a 91, one of the highest scores in Open history. Another high score in the first round belonged to one of the pre-tournament favorites, Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy. He had a 79, then shot 65 in Round 2 but missed the cut by one stroke.
