What Happened in the 2018 Open Championship

Francesco Molinari trailed by three stroke entering the final round of the 2018 British Open, then scored a bogey-free 69 to win by two over a quartet of runners-up: Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Justin Rose and Kevin Kisner.

And in so doing, Molinari became not the just the golfer from Italy to win The Open Championship, but the first to win any of the four professional majors.

Molinari was six strokes off the lead following the second round. But a 65 in Round 3 moved him up to solo fifth place, three strokes off the lead shared by Kisner, Schauffele and defending champ Jordan Spieth.

Molinari, who played the final 37 holes bogey-free, birdied the 14th and 17th holes of the final round, while the third-round co-leaders were going the other direction. Kisner had five bogeys or worse in the final round, Schauffele four and Spieth four. Spieth struggled to a 76 in the final round and fell to ninth. Tiger Woods, playing with Molinari, held the solo lead after his ninth hole. But Woods' chances ended with a double bogey on the 11th followed with a bogey on the 12th. And McIlroy tied the lead after his 14th hole, but couldn't make any more birdies down the stretch.
