What Happened in the 2018 U.S. Open

Brooks Koepka won the 2018 U.S. Open by a single stroke, becoming the first golfer since Curtis Strange in the late 1980s, and just the third in the post-World War II era, to win this major championship back-to-back.

Before Koepka in 2017-18, the only back-to-back U.S. Open champs since 1946 were Ben Hogan (1950-51) and Strange (1988-89). Koepka became the eighth overall back-to-back winner of the U.S. Open.

One year ealier, at the 2017 tournament, Koepka's victory was by four strokes and he finished at 272, 16-under-par. This year, on the treacherous and dried-out Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, Koepka finished at 1-over par 281.

Dustin Johnson had a four-stroke lead at the halfway point, but in the third round scored 77. Scoring was high enough that day, though, that Johnson still shared the lead with Koepka, Tony Finau and Daniel Berger.

Finau had a 72 and Berger a 73 in the final round, and they finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Johnson had a solid, final-round 70 for solo third, two behind Koepka's winning total.

Koepka scored 68 in the final round. The runner-up was Tommy Fleetwood, who started the final round six strokes off the lead. But he tied the then-U.S. Open 18-hole scoring record with a 63.
