1938 Curtis Cup Winner and Match Scores

The 1938 Curtis Cup was the fourth time this tournament was played. Following the USA's victory, the all-time standing was three wins for the United States and none for Great Britain, with one tie.

Final Score: USA 5.5, Great Britain 3.5

Dates Played: September 7-8, 1938

Location: Essex Country Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts

Team Captains: Margaret Wallace-Williamson for Great Britain and Frances Stebbins for the USA.

Team Rosters:

Notes: The powerhouse American team of Glenna Collett Vare and Patty Berg was vanquished in foursomes play by the British duo of Jessie Anderson and Elsie Corlett, and Team Great Britain ended Day 1 with a 2-point lead.

But Collett Vare and Berg both had their revenge in the singles session, posting two of the five singles victories by the Americans in the six-match session. That singles shellacking powered Team USA to its third victory in four Curtis Cups, without a loss.

Two Irish golfers played for the British side, but the team was still named only "Great Britain." This was the last Curtis Cup where that was the case, however. In future Cups, the Americans' opposition was named "Great Britain & Ireland."
