What Happened in the 2025 Open Championship

Scottie Scheffler dominated the 2025 British Open, not quite from the start but most of the way to the finish. And in so doing, he earned the third leg of the career Grand Slam.

Scheffler opened with a 68 at Royal Portrush, one stroke off the first-round lead shared by five golfers. With a 64 in Round 2, Scheffler went one in front. He stretched his lead to four strokes at the end of the third round after scoring 67.

The writing was on the wall for the rest of the players in the field when Scheffler began his final round with a tap-in birdie on the first hole. He opened a seven-stroke lead on the front nine, although that lead lead dropped to four before the turn. But early into the back nine his lead was back at six.

Scheffler wound up scoring 68 in that final round — just the seventh winner of The Open to score in the 60s all four rounds — cruising to that four-stroke victory. The runner-up was Harris English, who had been one of the five co-leaders after the first round.

It was the second major of the year in which English finished runner-up Scheffler, who earlier in the year won the 2025 PGA Championship. Scheffler was just the seventh golfer to this point to win both of those majors in the same year.

It was Scheffler's fourth overall victory in a major championship, and the third different major (after previous wins in The Masters and PGA) Scheffler had won. The victory gave Scheffler with three of the four titles needed for the career Grand Slam, with the U.S. Open still to go. It was Scheffler's 17th career win on the PGA Tour.
