What Happened in the 2002 U.S. Women's Open
Annika Sorenstam had a 2-stroke lead over Juli Inkster at the start of the final round of the 2002 U.S. Women's Open, but Inkster had a 2-stroke win over Sorenstam at the end of it.Inkster and Sorenstam were among the co-leaders at the halfway point of the tournament, then Sorenstam took a 2-stroke lead after 54 holes by scoring 69 to Inkster's 71 in the third round. But in the final round, it was 66 for Inkster and 70 for Sorenstam.
Inkster birdied the second and sixth holes of the final round to tie Sorenstam at 2-under. After both birdied the seventh hole, Inkster went into the lead when Sorenstam bogeyed No. 8. Inkster was two in front after the 11th hole and four ahead after the 15th. She finished at 4-under 276, two in front of runner-up Sorenstam.
Inkster was 42 years old, and the victory made her the second-oldest winner in U.S. Women's Open history at the time. It also made her just the second golfer, after Babe Zaharias, to win at least two LPGA majors over the age of 40. (Inkster also won the 2000 LPGA Championship after turning 40.)
It was the seventh and last of Inkster's wins in majors, and the 28th of her 31 career wins on the LPGA Tour. Sorenstam already had two wins in the USWO at this point, and went on to win a third at the 2006 U.S. Women's Open.
This tournament was the site of Nancy Lopez's final appearance in a U.S. Women's Open (she missed the cut). A 48-time LPGA winner and three-time major champion, Lopez was runner-up in the USWO four times, but never won it.
