What Happened in the 1977 U.S. Women's Open
Hollis Stacy won the 1977 U.S. Women's Open, the first of her three titles in this tournament. She won again the following year to go back-to-back, with her third victory in 1984. And Stacy won this one wire-to-wire, holding the outright lead after each round. She opened with a 70, the low score of the day and one that wasn't beaten by anyone the rest of the tournament. Stacy was at 143 following Round 2, two strokes in front of Nancy Lopez (who was playing her first tournament after turning pro), and three in front of JoAnne Carner.
A 75 in Round 3 put Stacy at 218, one ahead of Jan Stephenson with Lopez two behind in third.
Stacy's final-round 74 was matched by Lopez, with Carner carding a 73 to move up to third place. Stephenson ballooned to a 79 and dropped into a tie for fourth place. Lopez's second-place finish was the second of four times she finished runner-up in a U.S. Women's Open, a major championship that Lopez never won.
The Top 3 finishers, Stacy, Lopez and Carner, were all former winners of the U.S. Girls' Junior championship, and Stacy won that title three years running (1969-71). She joined Carner as one of just a handful of golfers to win both the U.S. Girls' Junior and U.S. Women's Open titles.
Beth Daniel, who went on to win 33 LPGA Tour titles, made the cut for the first time in a major here. She tied for 24th, earning low-amateur honors.
