What Happened in the 1974 U.S. Women's Open
Sandra Haynie was a 2-time major championship winner going into the 1974 U.S. Women's Open. She was a 3-time major champion going out.Haynie was five off the lead following the first round, two behind after 36 holes, and trailed by one entering the final round. JoAnne Carner held a two-stroke lead with nine holes left in her final round, but double-bogeyed the 13th hole and eventually finished tied fourth.
Among the contenders, Beth Stone was first to finish and posted 296 for the clubhouse lead. Carol Mann birdied the final hole to match Stone's score.
Haynie was one behind with two holes to play at that point. But on the 17th hole, she rolled in a 70-foot birdie putt to tie the lead. Then, on the last hole, Haynie sank a 15-foot birdie putt to win.
Only two women's majors were played in 1974 and Haynie won them both. A month earlier, she won the LPGA Championship. She was also the winner of the 1965 LPGA Championship. Her victory in this USWO was the 32nd of her 42 career wins on the LPGA Tour.
Two future major winners, Nancy Lopez and Jan Stephenson, made their U.S. Women's Open debuts this year. Lopez, 17 years old, tied for 18th place. She went on to a legendary career as one of the LPGA's all-time greats, but never won a USWO. Stephenson, who went on to win the 1983 U.S. Women's Open, tied for 44th.
Debbie Massey, a co-leader following the second round, finished seventh to earn low-amateur honors. Massey was part of Team USA in the 1974 Curtis Cup, and every other member of that team also made the cut in this USWO.
