What Happened in the 1973 U.S. Women's Open
Susie Maxwell Berning won the 1973 U.S. Women's Open for her third overall victory in this tournament, and her second consecutive. At the time, she was just the third golfer to win back-to-back USWO titles, and the fourth to win this major at least three times. Berning also won the 1965 Women's Western Open, making this the last of her four career wins in majors. It was her 10th overall victory on the LPGA Tour, and she won only once more after this.Amateur Cynthia (Cindy) Hill was the first-round leader with a 68. At the time that was the second-lowest score by an amateur in U.S. Women's Open history — and the lowest first-round score by anyone in tournament history. But Hill had three rounds of 79 or higher after that and fell well down the scoreboard. The eventual low amateur was Anne Quast Sander, who finished solo fourth.
Berning was seven off Sharon Miller's lead after 36 holes. But with a 69 in the third round, Berning moved into a tie for the lead with Pam Higgins at 218.
The fourth round opened with Berning parring the first hole and Higgins bogeying it, giving Berning the solo lead. Higgins wasn't a factor after the fifth hole and wound up scoring 79.
Shelley Hamlin began the final round three behind Berning, and got within one after her birdies on the 10th and 12th holes. But then she had a three-putt bogey on the 13th and fell away after that.
In the end, Berning scored 72 in the final round and recorded a five-stroke victory over Hamlin and Gloria Ehret.
