Rory McIlroy's Largest Margins of Victory
Rory McIlroy made a huge splash when he burst onto the PGA Tour around 2010, barely out of his teens. Two of his first four wins on the tour were major championships, and in both of them his winning margin was a whopping eight strokes.
Those two, 8-shot, major-championship victories in the early 2010s top the following list of McIlroy's largest margins of victory on the PGA Tour. So far in his career, McIlroy has five wins on the tour by margins of five strokes or more.
McIlroy's Wins By 5 or More on PGA Tour
- 8-stroke winning margin — 2011 U.S. Open. This was just McIlroy's second win on the PGA Tour (also his second win on the European Tour) and it cemented him as a superstar in the golf world. The runner-up was Jason Day. With scores of 65-66-68-69, McIlroy was just the fifth golfer in U.S. Open history to score below 70 all four rounds. His 268 total and 16-under-par score were both U.S. Open records.
- 8 strokes — 2012 PGA Championship. Second major championship victory, second 8-stroke margin of victory. McIlroy scored 67-75-67-66 for a 13-under-par total of 275. The runner-up was David Lynn. The 8-stroke winning margin was a PGA Championship record, breaking the previous record (7 strokes) held by Jack Nicklaus.
- 7 strokes — 2015 Wells Fargo Championship. Scored 70-67-61-69 for a 21-under total of 267. Webb Simpson and Patrick Rodgers tied for second.
- 7 strokes — 2019 Canadian Open. Scored 67-66-64-61 for a 22-under total of 258. The runners-up were Simpson and Shane Lowry.
- 5 strokes — 2024 Wells Fargo Championship. Scored 67-68-67-65 (17-under 267) for the 5-shot win over second-place Xander Schauffele.
Aside from the two majors championships on the list above, McIlroy does not have any additional wins by five strokes or more on other tours.
