What Happened in the 1971 U.S. Women's Open
JoAnne Carner earned her first LPGA major championship title with a 7-stroke romp in which she shared or held the lead after each round. The distant runner-up was Kathy Whitworth, and Carner finished 11 strokes in front of the quartet of third-place finishers that included Mickey Wright. For Wright, a 4-time USWO champ, it was her last Top 5 finish in any LPGA major (she played in only four more after this). Whitworth, who finished as the LPGA's all-time wins leader with 88, never won the USWO, and this was her only runner-up finish in this major.
Carner was tied with two-time defending champ Donna Caponi (who was among the third-place finishers) after the first round, but led outright after that. She took a 5-stroke lead into the final round.
This was the first of two USWO titles for Carner, who went on to win the 1976 U.S. Women's Open. It was just the third of her eventual 44 LPGA Tour victories.
Carner joined the list of golfers who won both the U.S. Women's Amateur and U.S. Women's Open. But the victory made Carner the first golfer ever to win all three of the U.S. Girls' Junior, U.S. Women's Amateur and U.S. Women's Open titles. It was her seventh overall victory in a USGA championship.
Pat Bradley missed the cut as an amateur in her USWO and major championship debut. She went on to win six majors, including the 1981 U.S. Women's Open. Amateur Sally Little, a future 2-time major winner and 2-time U.S. Women's Open runner-up, made the cut in a major for the first time here, tying for 47th.
