Most Foursomes Matches Won in Ryder Cup

Which golfers in Ryder Cup history have the most wins in foursomes matches? The four biggest winners in foursomes were all Team Europe players, and a Spanish golfer is the one on top.

That Spanish golfer is Sergio Garcia. Garcia was part of the winning side in 12 foursomes matches over his Ryder Cup career, the only golfer so far to reach 12 wins.

As a reminder, foursomes is the format that is also known as alternate shot. So in those 12 foursomes victories, Garcia was playing only half the strokes, his partner the other half. It helps to have good partners in this format! Foursomes matches have been part of the Ryder Cup since the beginning in 1927.

The List: Golfers With Most Ryder Cup Foursomes Wins

  • 12 wins — Sergio Garcia, Team Europe, overall record in foursomes 12-4-3 (wins-losses-halves)
  • 11 wins — Bernhard Langer, Team Europe, overall record in foursomes 11-6-1
  • 10 wins — Nick Faldo, Team GB&I/Europe, overall record in foursomes 10-6-2
  • 10 wins — Seve Ballesteros, Team Europe, overall record in foursomes 10-3-1
  • 9 wins — Arnold Palmer, Team USA, overall record in foursomes 9-3-0
  • 9 wins — Lanny Wadkins, Team USA, overall record in foursomes 9-6-0
  • 9 wins — Lee Westwood, Team Europe, overall record in foursomes 9-7-4
  • 9 wins — Rory McIlroy, Team Europe, overall record in foursomes 9-5-1
The list leans heavily toward more-recent players because for the early part of the Ryder Cup's history only a single foursomes session was played. Only in the 1960s did it become possible for golfers to play in more than one foursomes match in a given Ryder Cup. Since then most Cups (and all recent ones) have includes two foursomes sessions.
