Final Score: United States 13.5, Great Britain & Ireland 10.5

Dates Played: May 25-26, 1983

Location: Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, Merseyside, England

Team Captains: Jay Sigel for the United States, Charlie Green for Great Britain & Ireland

Team Rosters:

  • USA — Nathaniel Crosby, Brad Faxon, Rick Fehr, William Hoffer, Jim Holtgrieve, Bob Lewis Jr., David Tentis, Billy Tuten, Willie Wood, Jay Sigel (playing captain)
  • GB&I — David Carrick, Stephen Keppler, Malcolm Lewis, George Macgregor, Lindsay Mann, Andrew Oldcorn, Philip Parkin, Arthur Pierse, Martin Thompson, Philip Walton
Notes: Team USA broke open a very closely contested competition by winning five of the final eight singles matches, turning an 8-8 tie going into the Day 2 singles into a three-point victory.

The teams were tied following the Day 1 foursomes, and tied again following the Day 2 foursomes. On the first day, the American side of Bob Lewis Jr. and Jim Holtgrieve scored a 7-and-6 win over GB&I's Malcolm Lewis and Martin Thompson. At the time, it was the largest winning margin in any 18-hole foursomes match in Walker Cup history (a record since broken).

The star of the match was GB&I's Andrew Oldcorn, who went 4-0-0 — the first time any GB&I player played the maximum four matches and won them all. Oldcorn's singles wins were over Billy Tuten and Holtgrieve.

Bob Lewis and Brad Faxon led the American side with three points each.
