NCAA Men's Golf Championship Team Winners

The men's college golf championship today is awarded at the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship tournament. That event takes place in May or June every year following a series of regional tournaments that whittle the field.

The tournament was stroke play through 2008, but beginning in 2009 switched to a stroke play/match play format. Now, the NCAA Division Men's Golf Championship tournament begins with stroke-play qualifying rounds (which also serve to crown the NCAA golf championship's individual winner), after which eight schools advance into a match-play bracket.

Which schools have won the most titles? Overall, Yale holds the record with 21 titles. But only one of Yale's wins was an NCAA championship. The NCAA took over the tournament beginning in 1939. Prior to that, an organization known as NIGA ran the tournament. Twenty of Yale's wins were in the pre-NCAA years. Counting only NCAA titles, the record is 16 wins by the University of Houston, followed by Oklahoma State's 11 and Stanford's eight.
