Golfers With the Most Singles Losses in Solheim Cup

Who holds the record for most losses in Solheim Cup singles matches? Which golfer has suffered the most singles defeats in the biennial Team USA vs. Team Europe competition?

The answer is Trish Johnson of Team Europe. In eight singles matches, Johnson avoided defeat only once. For Team USA, the most singles losses have been recorded by Brittany Lincicome.

Below is the list of all golfers who have lost at least four times in Solheim Cup singles. While some of them have bad overall records, appearing on this list doesn't necessarily mean the golfer was a bad singles player in the Solheim Cup — she might have simply played a lot of matches. Two golfers who appear below didn't even have losing records.

The List: Most Solheim Cup Singles Losses

The numbers next to each golfer's name represent her overall singles record (wins-losses-halves). Also noted for each are the opponents she did beat.

Trish Johnson, 1-7-0

Johnson played in eight Solheim Cups, including the very first in 1990 (her loss to Pat Bradley that year was the very first singles match). Her last playing appearance was in 2007.
  • 1990: lost to Pat Bradley, 8 and 7
  • 1994: lost to Beth Daniel, 1-down
  • 1996: lost to Dottie Pepper, 3 and 2
  • 1998: lost to Dottie Pepper, 3 and 2
  • 2000: lost to Dottie Pepper, 2 and 1
  • 2005: lost to Pat Hurst, 2 and 1
  • 2007: lost to Angela Stanford, 3 and 2
Johnson's lone win in singles was over Patty Sheehan in 1992.

Brittany Lincicome, 1-5-0

Lincicome's six playing appearances range from 2007 to 2017.
  • 2007: lost to Laura Davies, 4 and 3
  • 2011: lost to Christel Boeljon, 2-down
  • 2013: lost to Jodi Ewart Shadoff, 3 and 2
  • 2015: lost to Karine Icher, 3 and 2
  • 2017: lost to Carlota Ciganda, 4 and 3
Like Johnson, Lincicome won only (so far) one singles match. It was a victory over Sophie Gustafson in 2009.

Laura Davies, 5-5-2

Davies played in all 12 of the first 12 Solheim Cups, from 1990 to 2011. That means she played 12 singles matches, so it is not surprising she shows up on this list: that's more singles matches than anyone else in tournament history. She also shows up on the list of golfers (see link above) with the most Solheim Cup wins.
  • 1994: lost to Brandie Burton, 1-down
  • 1996: lost to Michelle McGann, 3 and 2
  • 2000: lost to Kelly Robbins, 3 and 2
  • 2002: lost to Meg Mallon, 3 and 2
  • 2005: lost to Paula Creamer, 7 and 5
Davies' wins were against Rosie Jones, Brandie Burton, Pat Hurst, Meg Mallon and Brittany Lincicome; she also halved with Brittany Lang, and, in what was the final playing appearance for them both, Juli Inkster.

Maria Hjorth, 0-4-1

Hjorth played in five successive Solheim Cups, from 2002 through 2011.
  • 2002: lost to Kelly Robbins, 5 and 3
  • 2005: lost to Natalie Gulbis, 2 and 1
  • 2007: lost to Paula Creamer, 2 and 1
  • 2011: lost to Christina Kim, 4 and 2
She failed to record a singles victory, but did produce a tie against Cristie Kerr to avoid a complete shutout.

Suzann Pettersen, 2-4-3

Pettersen's nine playing appearances spanned from 2002 through 2019. She ended her playing career by sinking a putt to win her final singles match and clinch the 2019 Solheim Cup victory for Team Europe.
  • 2003: lost to Cristie Kerr, 1-down
  • 2007: lost to Stacy Prammanasudh, 2-down
  • 2009: lost to Paula Creamer, 3 and 2
  • 2015: lost to Angela Stanford, 2 and 1
Her two wins were against Michelle Wie, and, in that 2019 competition, Marina Alex. Pettersen also halved with Michele Redman, Rosie Jones and Lizette Salas.

Sophie Gustafson, 3-4-1

Gustafson played in eight Solheim Cups, first in 1998, last in 2011 (when she ended her career in this competition by going 4-0-0).
  • 2000: lost to Brandie Burton, 4 and 3
  • 2005: lost to Juli Inkster, 2 and 1
  • 2007: lost to Pat Hurst, 2 and 1
  • 2009: lost to Brittany Lincicome, 3 and 2
Her three victories were over Cristie Kerr, Heather Bowie and Stacy Lewis; her one tie was against Meg Mallon.

Cristie Kerr, 3-4-2

Kerr played in nine Solheim Cups, first appearing in 2002 and last in 2017. One of the losses that puts her on this list was a forfeit.
  • 2002: lost to Sophie Gustafson, 3 and 2
  • 2005: lost to Gwladys Nocera, 2 and 1
  • 2007: lost to Linda Wessberg, 1-down
  • 2011: lost to Karen Stupples, concession due to injury
Kerr posted singles wins against Suzann Pettersen, Charley Hull and Melissa Reid, and she had ties with Maria Hjorth and Karine Icher.

Helen Alfredsson, 4-4-0

Alfredsson played eight singles matches in the Solheim Cup, from the inaugural 1990 tournament until her final appearance in 2011.
  • 1990: lost to Cathy Gerring, 4 and 3
  • 1996: lost to Meg Mallon, 4 and 2
  • 2002: lost to Emilee Klein, 2 and 1
  • 2009: lost to Michelle Wie, 1-down
Among the golfers with four or more singles losses, Alfredsson definitely has the most impressive list of wins. After beating Danielle Ammaccapane in 1992, Alfredsson also vanquished three legends: Betsy King, Juli Inkster and Beth Daniel.
