What Happened in the 2026 PGA Championship
Aaron Rai closed with a flourish, including making a near-70-foot-long putt late, to win the 2026 PGA Championship. Rai thus became the first golfer from England to win this major in more than 100 years, since Jim Barnes in 1919.Rai opened with a first-round 70 to trail by three, but that was the highest score he recorded for the tournament. He lowered his score each successive round, but he was still three strokes off the lead at the halfway point.
In the third round, Alex Smalley went in front by himself after sharing the first- and second-round leads. Big names were all over the leaderboard: Jon Rahm and Ludvig Aberg among those tied for second, three behind; Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele and Patrick Reed among those three strokes back. And Rai, after a third-round 67, was one of those tied for second place.
But in the final round, Rai carded a 65, just the fifth final round of 65 or lower in a PGA Championship by the golfer who went on to win.
Smalley acquitted himself well with a final-round 70 and tied for second, three behind. Of the big names in contention, Rahm finished highest, tied second.
Rai got off to a shaky start in the final round with bogeys on three of his first eight holes. But then the putts started dropping, including a 40-footer for eagle on No. 9.
When Rai birdied the 13th hole, he went into the lead for the first time. He added another birdie on No. 16, then sealed the victory by rolling in a 68-foot birdie putt on No. 17.
Rai's previous best finish in any major was tied for 19th, a finish he had achieved three times. It was his second win on the PGA Tour.
