All of Arnold Palmer's Scores, Finishes in PGA Championship

Arnold Palmer first played in the PGA Championship in 1958, and last played in this major in 1994. He played in the PGA Championship a total of 37 times. And while Palmer recorded good finishes in the PGA, it is the only one of the four professional major championships that he never won.

Palmer had 13 Top 25 finishes in the PGA Championship, six Top 10 finishes, four Top 5 finishes and three runner-up finishes. But his lack of a victory in this major is what prevented Palmer from completing the career grand slam. Not only did Palmer never win the PGA, but he led after any round of the tournament only once in his career (after the first round of the 1960 PGA Championship).

Palmer's 37 starts in the PGA Championship is the tournament record for appearances in the tournament's stroke-play era. His 37 starts were consecutive (no skipped years), too, which is the overall tournament record.

Arnie's Second-Place PGA Championship Finishes

From 1964-70, a span of seven tournaments, Palmer tied for second three times. His three runner-up finishes is second-best in PGA Championship history, behind only Jack Nicklaus' four seconds.
  • 1964 PGA Championship: Bobby Nichols was the wire-to-wire winner, with Palmer and Nicklaus chasing. But they never caught up, settling on a tie for second place. Palmer was one stroke off the lead following both the second and third rounds, but scored 69 to Nichols' 67 in the final round to finish three behind.

  • 1968 PGA Championship: In sweltering San Antonio, Texas, 48-year-old Julius Boros set a record (since broken) as the oldest major championship winner. Palmer closed with a 70 and tied Bob Charles for second place, one behind Boros. Palmer missed an 8-foot birdie opportunity on the final green that would have forced a playoff.

  • 1970 PGA Championship: This was the last of Palmer's 10 career second-place finishes in majors. Palmer was five strokes off Dave Stockton's 54-hole lead. He outscored Stockton in the final round, 70 to 73, and finished tied with Bob Murphy two strokes back of Stockton.

Palmer's 68-68-69-69 in 1964 made him the first golfer to post four rounds in the 60s at any major championship. The 1989 PGA Championship wasn't just Palmer's final cut made in this major, but it was the last time he made the cut in any major.
