What Happened in the 1984 U.S. Women's Open
Hollis Stacy won her third U.S. Women's Open crown in 1984, the fourth player to win this championship at least three times. (The three who preceded her were Betsy Rawls and Mickey Wright, who each won four times; and Babe Didrikson Zaharias, who also won three.)Having previously won the U.S. Girls' Junior in 1969, 1970 and 1971, Stacy became the first golfer to win that USGA championship and this one three times each. She remains the only one to do so. And with this victory, Stacy became just the fourth golfer, male or female, to win at least six USGA national championships (others have since joined her with six or more such titles).
Stacy was three strokes off the lead of Amy Alcott and Donna White as the final round began. And after making a six on the fourth hole, Stacy found herself five shots off the lead, then shared by Alcott and Betsy King. But, as Rosie Jones also worked herself into the mix, Stacy birdied Nos. 5 and 8. On the 13th hole, she holed-out a 7-iron approach shot for an eagle two. Then Stacy sank a 20-foot birdie putt on the 16th.
Stacy finished with pars on the 17th and 18th holes. Alcott and Jones were both in position to tie or win outright, but neither could do it. Jones bogeyed the last hole and Alcott double-bogeyed it. Stacy finished at 290 to win by one stroke over runner-up Jones. Alcott tied for third place with Lori Garbacz, two strokes behind. Stacy's 69 in the final round tied for lowest score of the tournament.
Kathy Whitworth, 6-time major champ and the LPGA's all-time wins leader, tied for 10th place. It was her final Top 10 finish in the U.S. Women's Open or any LPGA major. Dottie Pepper, a future 2-time major winner, earned low amateur honors in her major championship debut with a tie for 22nd place.
