Leaders after first round: Amy Alcott, Barbara Moxness, 70

Leader after second round: Amy Alcott, 140

Leader after third round: Amy Alcott, 208

What Happened in the 1980 U.S. Women's Open

Amy Alcott set a tournament scoring record and ran away to a 9-shot win in the 1980 U.S. Women's Open. Alcott shared or held the lead outright following each round.

Her lead was four after the second round, and a third-round 68 (tied for low round of the tournament) pushed Alcott's lead to eight strokes following the third round.

Hollis Stacy was the distant runner-up. When Alcott closed with a 72, she posted 280, nine ahead of Stacy. That 280 total was the new U.S. Women's Open 72-hole scoring record, lowering by one the mark set one year previously (and Alcott's 280 also stood as the record for just one year). Alcott finished a 4-under, just the fifth golfer in USWO history to this point to finish under par. Her 9-stroke win was the third-largest U.S. Women's Open margin of victory to this point.

For Alcott, it was her second win in a major championship (of an eventual five), and the 12th of her 29 career LPGA Tour victories.

Six-time LPGA Tour winner Jo Ann Prentice played the USWO for the 25th and final time this year. Those appearances were in consecutive years, beginning in 1956 — at the time the fourth-longest streak of consecutive appearance in USWO history.
