Where it was played: Portland Golf Club in Portland, Oregon

Leader after second round: Gene Littler, 142

Leader after third round: Dan Sikes, 216

What Happened in the 1982 U.S. Senior Open

Miller Barber used the lowest final-round score in the tournament's young history to pass the third-round leader and win the 1982 U.S. Senior Open by four strokes. Barber's 65 in Round 4 was the first 65 scored in the final round of this tournament, and nobody scored lower than that in the final round of a USSO until 2005.

Barber's total score of 282 lowered the tournament scoring record, established by Roberto De Vicenzo in the inaugural tournament two years earlier, by three strokes. This was the first of Barber's three victories in the U.S. Senior Open — he went on to win 1984 and 1985. All the way until 2026 he remained the tournament's only three-time champion.

Barber was one off the lead following the first round, and trailed by four following the second. Dan Sikes took the lead after the third round, but Barber — with a 71, the lowest score of the round — moved back into second place, one stroke behind.

Then came Barber's final-round 65, the lowest score of the tournament by three strokes. He pulled away to a four-stroke victory, and was the only golfer to finish under par. Gene Littler, the second-round leader, closed with a 68 to tie Sikes, who had a 70, a very good score on the day, for second place.
