What Happened in the 2019 U.S. Senior Open
Steve Stricker matched or set tournament scoring records in every round and pulled away to win the 2019 U.S. Senior Open by six strokes.Stricker and defending champion David Toms each scored 62 in the first round, tying the tournament's 18-hole record. In the second round, Stricker moved two ahead of second-place Jerry Kelly and three in front of Toms. Following the third round, Stricker's lead was six over Kelly and seven over Toms, the second-larged 54-hole lead to this point in any USSO.
And Stricker finished at 261, lowering the U.S. Senior Open 72-hole scoring record by three strokes. His six shot winning margin over runner-up Kelly tied the tournament record. And Stricker also set new records for 36- and 54-hole totals in a U.S. Senior Open.
Stricker also won The Tradition, another senior major, in 2019, becoming just the third golfer to win both the USSO and Tradition in the same year.
For only the second time in tournament history, no amateurs made the cut. Neither did Tom Kite, who made his final start in this tournament, his 18th. Tom Watson made his final start, too, his 17th overall, and finished closer to the top of the leaderboard than to the bottom. Kite and Watson also made their U.S. Senior Open debuts in the same year, 2000.
