Big Break Ka'anapali: Winner and Cast Members

Big Break Ka'anapali was a television series that aired on the Golf Channel in 2008. It was the ninth season of the network's The Big Break franchise. The first episode aired on April 15, 2008.

Big Break Ka'anapali was taped at Ka'anapali Resort on the island of Maui in Hawaii, on the resort's Royal Course and Kai Course. Prizes for the winner included an exemption into the 2008 Navistar LPGA Classic; the waiving of entry fees to all 2009 Futures Tour tournaments; an Adams Golf endorsement deal; and a BMW Z4 Coupe.

The hosts were Stina Sternberg and former PGA Tour player-turned-broadcaster Andrew Magee.

Winner of Big Break Ka'anapali

Kim Welch was the season champion. She was crowned the Big Break Ka'anapali winner as the result of an 18-hole championship match victory over runner-up Sophie Sandolo.

The match was close throughout the first nine, but Welch — who was routinely 60 yards longer off the tee than Sandolo — began pulling away on the back nine.

Following a Sandolo 3-putt, Welch led 3-up after the 13th hole. They halved the 14th, then Sandolo missed a birdie putt on the 15th after Kim was in with birdie, and that gave Kim the final 4-and-3 winning margin.

How Welch fared in her LPGA exemption: As noted above, by winning Big Break Ka'anapali, Welch got into the LPGA Tour's 2008 Navistar LPGA Classic. Alas, it was a tale of two rounds for her in that appearance. In the first round, Welch carded a 2-under 70. In the second round, she had a 5-over 77. That gave her a 3-over total of 147, and she missed the cut.
