1955 Walker Cup Winner and Match Scores

The 1955 Walker Cup was the 15th time this competition took place. Following the United States victory, the all-time standings were 14 wins for Team USA, one win for Team GB&I.

Final Score: United States 10, Great Britain & Ireland 2

Dates Played: May 20-21, 1955

Location: The Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland

Team Captains: William C. Campbell for the United States, Alec Hill for Great Britain & Ireland

Team Rosters:

  • USA — Don Cherry, Joe Conrad, Bruce Cudd, Jimmy Jackson, Dale Morey, Billy Joe Patton, Harvie Ward, Dick Yost
  • GB&I — David Blair, Ian Caldwell, Joe Carr, Robert Cater, Cecil Ewing, Gerald Micklem, Bunny Millward, John Llewellyn Morgan, Philip Scrutton, Ronnie White
Notes: The American side swept the Day 1 foursomes en route to a 10-2 win, the margin of which was considered surprising even though Team USA routinely (in the early history of the Walker Cup) ran up the score against GB&I. This U.S. team, however, included only one golfer who had reached the final of the U.S. Amateur, none who had (yet) won it or the British Amateur. However, Harvie Ward later won both the 1955 and 1956 U.S. Amateurs, and Joe Conrad, shortly after this Walker Cup ended, won the 1955 British Amateur.

The American side also included Don Cherry, who by this point had released multiple hit songs on the Billboard singles chart, and in 1955 had his biggest, a million-seller named Band of Gold.

On the GB&I side, Ronnie White suffered his first (and only) Walker Cup singles loss, falling to Harvie Ward after four previous singles wins.
