1922 Walker Cup Winner and Match Scores

The very first Walker Cup ever played, the 1922 match inaugurated the Great Britain & Ireland vs. United States competition pitting teams of amateur men golfers. And Team USA was the first winner.

The format — four, 36-hole foursomes matches on the first day, eight 36-hole singles matches on the second day — stayed the same for a few decades after.

Final Score: United States 8, Great Britain and Ireland 4

Dates Played: August 28-29, 1922

Location: National Golf Links of America in Southampton, New York

Team Captains: Robert Harris for Great Britain & Ireland, William C. Fownes for the United States

Team Rosters:

Notes: GB&I captain Robert Harris was originally a playing-captain, but was replaced on the playing roster by journalist Bernard Darwin, who had traveled with the GB&I team to cover the tournament.

The inaugural American team was one of the strongest in Walker Cup history, and won three of the Day 1 foursomes, and the first five singles matches on the second day.

Darwin, the journalist replacement, did manage one of GB&I's victories, however, defeating American captain Fownes in the final singles match.
